Lacquer Artists
Kou Yan
Artist Statement
“Purity of form and content is traditionally what characterizes good lacquer art. Yet, interdependent culture is inevitable in the contemporary world, therefore complicating previously ‘pure’ art forms. As the adage goes, ‘research the ancient but develop the new’, the meaning of contemporary lacquer art is, developed from tradition, to extend its character and to build it as the Chinese art today.”
