Derek Au
Artist Statement
Derek Au is a functional ceramicist living in Jingdezhen, China.
Recently, Derek has been investigating the relationship between ceramics and metalwork. From ancient Chinese pottery and bronze, through Song dynasty Qingbai porcelain and silver, to contemporary ceramics and tinware, ceramics and metal craft traditions have been in a long-running dialogue.
Derek has developed a porcelain slab technique that aims not necessarily to imitate metalware forms, but rather to emulate metalsmithing techniques in an attempt to find alternatives to traditional ceramics production processes.
His first series, Planeware, focused on simplicity of form and technique, often echoing the forms of tinware. Derek's most recent work is influenced by Tang and Song silver and Qingbai ware.
